August is National Family Fun Month and getting ready for the new school year.
Retail stores have already kicked off back-to-school season with shelves full of supplies for the August 25th first day (for most Maryland public schools). This is not exactly the best way to start National Family Fun Month, however there are a few weeks left to enjoy the last full month of summer. And, there are plenty of fun ways to close out the season even as school officials plan back-to-school activities. Even if your big summer trip is a memory, plenty of weekend and evening hours remain to enjoy family time.
Below are some family fun ideas to do before every one in the Tri-state area says “goodbye” to the long summer days of 2025.
To celebrate Family Fun Month, you may want to consider:
- Enjoy a backyard campfire, roasting marshmallows and making s’mores
- Take a family bike ride or hike on the C & O Canal or Antietam Battlefield
- Visit an area zoo or aquarium
- Go fishing in a pond or on the Potomac River
- Take an overnight camping trip to a local campground
- Take a day trip to nearby town or city, such as Frederick, MD, Gettysburg, PA, Annapolis, MD
- Go to a community pool for some fun and sun
- Pack a picnic and play games in a local park then stop for ice cream
